Hiking in Taiwan: More than Trails in Xitou /

Deep in the central mountains of Nantou County is Lugu Township and a spectacular forest park. Once a site used by students of the University of Tokyo during the Japanese occupation of Taiwan, sits Xitou Nature Education Area. This unique protected area is actually part of a much larger experimental forest owned and operated by National Taiwan University.

Visitors are drawn to Xitou for its trails and paths that criss-cross the beautiful forests and valleys. But there is something more here to discover too. Whether it’s the unique and endemic birds, insects and other wildlife or perhaps it’s the interpretation and sheer range of plants and tree species that are found in Xitou.

Here’s the only guide you’ll need to explore the best of Xitou Nature Education Area:

Walk on the Skywalk /

Well we know we said there is more to the park than just the trails and paths, but this one is a great and unique experiences while hiking in Taiwan’s protected areas. The Skywalk in Xitou Nature Education area over 22m in height that extends for about 180 meters. A great place for bird watching, this elevated boardwalk is perched amongst the dense forest canopy in Xitou. Its hard to believe but from atop this trail, you’ll find yourself hiking more than 2,000m above sea level.

Xitou University Pond / 大學池

Taiwan is a small mountainous country and doesn’t have many large bodies of water that aren’t manmade. While Xitou’s University Pond (溪頭自然教育園區大學池) isn’t a natural body of water, nor is it particularly large it is a really nice feature and a great place to stop for a snack or lunch. The pond is only about 10 meters deep and filled with small coy fish. It is also a good place to spot frogs by the water’s edge. This is a very picturesque setting and perfect for taking pictures and relaxing near by after hiking the trails in Xitou.

Check out these Trees…Giant Trees /

As we mentioned, Xitou is part of an experimental forest belonging to National Taiwan University. Only a small section of wheel preserved natural broad-leaves and a few remaining remanents of an ancient forest, most of the forest in this protected area has been planted and cultivated purposely. A sheer variety of trees grown in Xitou is spectacular including Japanese and Chinese cedars, Hinoki cypress (Chamaecyparis obtuse), red spruces, Bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis – see below), and many other different kinds of trees. While hiking in the forest of Xitou you’ll also see some fallen giants. The park is home to a few ancient cypress trees, the largest of which stood taller than 46 meters and was aged at around 2,800 years old before it fell in 2016. In general, the forests of Xitou are actually pretty manicured and ‘neat’ compared to some of the more natural and dense forests of Taipingshan, Guanwu or Daxueshan.
