Product Number: PBTW019-1026

☀️☀️☀️ Trail Rating: Easy ☀️☀️☀️
Join Parkbus Taiwan for an amazing day out hiking from New Taipei City to Yilan along the little-known, but epic Tonghou Traversing Trail. This is a difficult trail to get to without your own car and a really difficult trail to complete end-to-end unless you have two. Parkbus Taiwan offers a fun, small-group hiking experience that includes travel insurance, a licensed, bilingual tour guide, private van drop-off in Wulai at the western end of the trail and pick-up in Jiaoxi on the eastern side.

UPDATE - We have reduced the total hiking distance of this hike from 22km to just over 8km. This hiking experience will take around 5 hours to complete, however, we will spend an extended time at the river, enjoying the cool mountain water, having lunch, swimming, etc. Due to transportation limitations to get directly to the trailhead, we have limited this trip to 7 guests and 1 guide.

This is a thru-hike and guests on this hike will successfully travel from Wulai District in New Taipei City to Jiaoxi in Yilan County. This hike is suitable for beginner to intermediate hikers who are comfortable hiking a moderate distance and it doesn't require any mountaineering experience. The trail itself is relatively flat with only small sections of elevation changes.

We will now drive the first section, along 13km of a mostly flat and hard-surfaced forest road (桶後林道) managed by the Hsinchu Forest Bureau. This section offers beautiful views of the surrounding valley and the Tonghuo River a few hundred meters below. As the road progresses deeper into the valley, it also descends closer to the valley floor with the river increasingly getting closer.

Our transportation will drop us off at the western terminus of the actual Tonghou Traversing Trail. Here the trail is mostly compact soil and winds along the edge of the river for about 6km. Guests will travel upriver towards the headwaters along this remote and extremely picturesque trail. With little elevation gain, the river stays right next to the hikers for much of this stunning journey. It's a spectacular trail that is easy and very scenic.

Following the descent along an elevated platform, there are several spots where guests can watch the river flow by and we've selected the perfect location for guests to sit and enjoy a riverside lunch or snack. If the weather suits the guests, they can even jump into the river for a short dip to cool off in the refreshing mountain water.

Along this section of the trail, depending on water levels, there are a few sections where guests may have to take off their boots and walk through small streams. The water is never too high and this makes this trail a really fun and interesting hike in nature. Continuing along the hike, guests will notice the river begins to get smaller and smaller until we take the final 2km will take the guests up towards a small ridge covered in beautiful silver grass and up past the headwaters of this waterway to the eastern terminus of the trail.

The third and final section of this trail is about 3km along a double-track trail and old compact soil road with views across the Langyan Plains of Yilan County. On a clear day, guests will look over the plains and the Pacific Ocean with views of the famous Turtle Island off in the distance. A short descent along this roadway brings guests to our pick-up location, where our private vans will pick the guests up and return them to Taipei Main Station.

Notice

⚠️ This small group hiking trip is limited to 15 guests. If we are unable to secure 10 guests, we reserve the right to cancel this trip with advanced notice and full refunds provided to any guests who have already paid.

⚠️ This tour is been rated as "Easy", primarily due to the reduced distance covered throughout the day. There are limited elevation gains on this hike and the total distance is about 8km. We decided to bypass the 13km of this hike that was on a hard surface forest road. The trail itself is only about 6km. There are a few sections with ropes, but these are for support and there is no vertical climbing or rock scrambling required to complete this hike. Guests who have moderate levels of fitness should not have difficulty completing this hike at the pace set by our guide.

⚠️ This tour is a guided, small-group hike. This means that the group will hike together with the guide. We know that some people enjoy hiking and being in nature alone, so this may mean that the group will meet at predefined checkpoints along the route to ensure the group stays together. Thank you for your understanding.

⚠️ As this trip doesn't include lunch, guests are expected to come prepared with sufficient water, lunch, snacks, and any personal items (eg bug repellant, camera, money, etc). Come prepared with everything you'll need for the day. Guests are also encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots and weather-appropriate clothing. Check the forecast closer to the trip date.

⚠️ You alone are responsible for your safety in the parks and forest recreation areas we visit. Many dangers exist, natural and man-made. You alone are responsible for being at pickup/drop-off areas on time. If you miss the return bus, you may become stranded in an area with no cellphone reception and will be responsible for arranging alternative transportation.
