Taipingshan National Forest (太平山國家森林遊樂區) wasn’t always a picturesque and well-maintained protected area and its troubled past provides a significant contribution to the cultural fabric of the region and country. There’s more to it than that though. It also boasts a unique ecological makeup that has evolved with a cool climate, coastal weather patterns and high elevation. The area is an ecological enchantment that offers visitors a chance to experience geothermal activities, primary and secondary forests, high-mountain lakes and other natural attractions.
One trail that offers a unique perspective as well as delivers absolutely stunning views is the famous Caoling Historic Trail. While a very popular trail in northern Taiwan, day trippers and hikers in Taiwan seek out this trail that stretches Yilan County on the east coast of Taiwan and New Taipei City.

A report released by a panel of atmospheric scientists from Taiwan’s prestigious research institute have identified a moderate chance that Aurora Borealis will be visible from areas surrounding Yangmingshan National Forest in Taipei, Taiwan. This will be the first time ever that this natural wonder, commonly known as “Northern Lights”, will be seen from such a low latitude.
Hiking the Dongman Trail (東滿步道) is unique. In fact, it might be a one-of-a-kind outdoor experience. There are not many (or any!) other trails in Taiwan that connect two National Forest Recreation Areas.
Due to its unique position, Hehuanshan is a gorgeous location to hike the high mountains, camp, and view some of Taiwan’s history. There was once an operating ski lift on the East Peak, which the remnants are still visible.
Hiking in Taiwan – If you have not been to the Dakeng Scenic Area in Taichung, you are in for some of the most unique trails you’ve ever hiked on! The Dakeng Hiking Trails are one of Taichung’s more popular areas, due to the vast network of trails, which are elevated wooden logs, and the scenery, which you’ve most likely seen on social media! There are 10 trails, and they are named Dakeng Trail #1 – #10. The first five trails are further out of the city, and more difficult and fun, with great views of Taichung and the surrounding mountains.
